For Korean barbecue, beef is my favorite. Naturally I like kalbi and bulgogi. But how about more of an easy and quick version? Korean bbq can be as easy as you want it to be. I like to buy boneless ribs and eat it many different ways but I like to marinate them in my quick Korean barbecue sauce.
1. First, purchase boneless ribs or rib steaks from a butchery. I bought mine from Costco. They have pretty good quality meat.
How thinly you want to slice will depend on following factors – how much time you have for marinating, whether you like thicker or thinner cuts, or if your meat is slightly frozen.

2. The marinate sauce includes 1) teriyaki sauce, 2) sesame oil, 3) minced garlic, and 4) sugar. For better flavors, you can add grated pear and onion into the mix.
For marinating sliced meat, it should take 2-3 hours before it’s fully marinated.

However, if you decide to marinate big chunks (steak size), try to leave them in the marinade at least overnight.

3. The fun part is cooking. I wish I lived in a house with a backyard because then I could grill them on a BBQ grill. It will taste so much better cooked in open fire. When your meat is somewhat thick, cook them in high heat first to seal the juice and then in lower heat.

5. I like mine medium.

It's ready. Enjoy!

Hi Peter, I have just marinated the beef steak as you described but without pear and onion as I don't have it at home and I have defrosted the beef earlier today and did not cook them as planned tonight. I will let you know the results tomorrow.
Hi Janet, I hope you will like it. This barbecue recipe is actually a simplified version of Galbi (also found under Korean) if without the grated pear and ginger. But it's still pretty decent.
Hi Peter, the beef tasted lovely, my hubby said I should make this more often. We have a party grill, also for raclette, very suitable for Korean BBQ. We made this in our terrace, very nice with the sunny weather today. The Swiss or French style do not marinate the meat but eat with a lot of different kind of sauce. I personally of course prefer the Korean way. There is no Korean restaurant here, so I am so happy to be able to make this. Will it work for chicken too? Next time, I would definitely try with pear and onion to see the difference.
Hi Janet, I'm glad it turned out delicious! Next time, if you want to add pear & onion, try adding grated pear, and grated fresh ginger (little bit), and little bit of grated onion to the marinade. You also just marinate chopped onions instead of using the grated onion mix itself as a marinade. It's a matter of your preference. For chicken barbecue, I would add a little more kick to the marinade. I would additionally add ground chili powder, and a little bit of fish sauce for a nice kick. Refer to this page for the full recipe. http://www.homecookingdiary.com/2008/02/korean-barbecue-chicken.html
Believe it or not, we had chicken tonight as I thought the marinade sauce can be reused and then I also saw you mentioned in another post that it can be reused. And this afternoon, I added some fish sauce and chili powder (the pizza ones). We were very happy with the results and think this will be good to have a few friends over for a small dinner gathering. We served it with a simple tomatoes (from our own garden) and lettuce salad with Italian dressing and Italian Barolo wine.
Thanks for the recipe again and plan to blog about this. I will link and refer back to your blog : )
Hey that's awesome! Glad it turned out good and you guys liked it. Usually, it's also very good for inviting people over since it's easy to prepare. All you gotta do is to have some fun now!
Hi Peter, I have just posted the Korean Chicken BBQ in my blog and link back to your recipes. Check out if have time. With the first attempt, I am confident to prepare both beef and chicken together next time when we have friends over. Do you have a recipe of how to marinate prawns or fish fillets too?
Hey I'm glad you're liking this recipe a lot! I haven't really posted anything Korean with fish or shrimp yet other than soup. I know I will soon. I got this fish mahi mahi fish recipe under my "Asian Fusion" section which is really good. Last time I used a different white fish instead and the marinade still worked pretty good.
Looks deliciously sweet. I'm fond of barbecue recipes , which I'm planning to prepare this New Year's eve for a twist. Happy cooking!
